Dryer Vent Booster Fans: Helpful or Dangerous

Recently we have once again had a rash of new homes, 8 yrs old or newer,  where the home owner either did not know they had a dryer booster fan installed.  We usually pick up that a booster fan is installed during our initial inspections of the dryer vent before cleaning.  Once we determine a dryer vent booster fan is installed the next step is to inspect and ensure the fan is in working order.

Builders error: Unfortunately we find that in many cases buy the time the homeowner calls us for help there are more causes for concern once we determine a booster fan is installed in the vent.
  • Builders should give the homeowner access to the fan.  Either buy having a hatch in the sheetrock or ensuring the fan is easy to reach.  Unfortunately we come accross those were no access have been given and we end up cutting through sheetrock ceilings just to reach the fan.
  • Fans not wired at all is another concern we see very often.  I hate to have to tell and show the homeowner that the builder of their home never ran electricty to the fan which is probably the root cause of their clogged dryer vent.
There are some signs that homeowners can look for to see if they have a booster fan installed.
  • Look for an extra light switch in the laundry that you do not use or don't know what it operates.
  • Check the distance of your dryer vent run.  If it is over 20' and your home is around 8 yrs old or newer there is a good possibility a booster fan is installed.
If your unsure call your local dryer vent cleaning professional.  http://www.westhoustondryerventcleaning.com/ has more information concern issues surrounding dryer vent cleaning.
